January 2023 - The Painted Ponies Return to Southern Pines!
This year I am again involved with The Carolina Horse Park and their Painted Ponies project. Each year artists from the area are asked to create a themed horse with their sponsor. After a showing in the beautiful town of Southern Pines, the ponies are auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Carolina Horse Park. Interested in owning your own pony?
Here's the link to the Carolina Horse Park website with auction details:

My sponsor this year is our very own Pilot newspaper. Our theme this year is "America's War Horse". Who was America's war horse?
photo of Reckless with TSgt. Joseph Latham, the marine that put her through boot, or "hoof" camp.
Sergeant Reckless, of course! Who was Sergeant Reckless? Read on...
Sergeant Reckless was a pack horse that served during the Korean war. A small Mongolian mare, Reckless carried recoilless rifles, ammunition and supplies to Marines. The huge and incredibly dangerous canon she carried ammunition for was nicknamed "reckless" and that's how she got her name.
Reckless was a favorite among the soldiers. She would sneak into their tents to snuggle and loved sharing their snacks. Her favorite meal was bacon and eggs. She was easy to train and took orders just as a good Marine should. She was loved.
During the battle for a location called Outpost Vegas, this mare made 51 trips up and down the hill, on the way up she carried ammunition, and on the way down she carried wounded soldiers…all in one day.
What makes that feat amazing is that she made every one of those trips without anyone leading her. Twice she was injured, patched up and sent back out.
Imagine a horse, loaded with around 600 pounds of ammunition trudging back and forth to a battle where artillery is going off, without anyone leading her. Wow. To know that she made 51 of those trips is unheard of.
After the battle for outpost Vegas Reckless earned her stripes as a Staff Sergeant with The United State Marine Corps. She also earned two purple heart medals for her injuries.
Reckless was retired at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton where a General issued the following order… she was never to carry any more weight on her back except her own blankets. She died in 1968 at the age of 20.
My horse is a visual story of Sergeant Reckless. She is muddy and injured, see her bandages? She has her heavy pack saddle on and the ammunition carriers, each would have weighed 150 pounds. I included her Marine patch and her purple heart - note the star for a second injury suffered in battle.
I highly recommend the book: Sgt. Reckless, America's War Horse by Robin Hutton. Here is a link to her website where you can read more about Reckless and support her efforts to bring the story of Reckless to everyone!

My piece is entitled "Where There's Smoke, There's Fire" inspired by the horrifying and heart-breaking stories of the burn pits in Iraq.
The art of Bullets & Bandaids is now on tour in Savannah, Columbia, Charlotte, Asheville and Charleston, dates below. I hope you can come out and view these incredible artworks and hear the stories that inspired them.
