What began as a simple painting of a bay horse with a gorgeous red background.
The addition of multiple layers of paint, scraping, distressing and texture led to signage.
The Red Horse Tavern does exist. There are several in the United States and many in Europe. This is a sign for a tavern from my imagination, circa 1810.
